Text by Natalie Hepfer

When Ann Wood and Dean Lucker met at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the 1980s, they immediately realized that they shared the same philosophy. “We both agreed that art should be connected to daily life,” Ann says. She and Dean, now married, have been sharing a studio and working together ever since. Personal storytelling and everyday experiences are the heart and soul of their creations. Through their art, which embodies both folk and conceptual qualities, the duo puts a contemporary twist on traditional ideas.

Ann blends bold colors with a variety of textiles in her vibrant paintings. (b) Dean’s sculptures are unique pieces with several moveable parts driven by electric motors. (c) The two also unite their talents, creating paintings that double as games.

(d) Ann and Dean often turn to the “idea wall” in their St. Paul, Minnesota, studio. The collage of sketches, projects, and pictures inspires them. (e) Various elements and objects wait on every available space, ready to become part of finished works.
