In addition to their separate endeavors, the artists often create charming
mechanical pictures together, merging their talents and combining their
interests in sculpture and painting. Like Dean’s sculptures, the mechanical
pictures have moving parts that use handmade brass components.
(f) Assorted plans, tools, and materials cover the workbench in Dean’s woodshop,
surrounding a work in progress. Dean’s completed sculpture, now on display at
Como Park Conservatory, starts moving when a coin is inserted. Funds generated
by the piece purchase plants for the conservatory.
 (g) “Lady and the Weasel” is a sculptural painting, a perfect mingling of the
two art forms. (h) Ann illustrates real-life emotions through fantasy.
(i) Dean’s delightful sculpture, located at the Minneapolis Children’s
Hospital, comforts sick children. When the button is pressed, a bird flies
gracefully into the girl’s waiting hand, offering a message of hope.(j) A wondrous bird lifts his hanky, revealing symbolic
objects that include a
locket and a rabbit. (k) A
dancer hides inside a golden pear in this
mechanical picture.
