Kelly Marshall has always had a passion for textiles. “I started
knitting at a young age,” she remembers. “Even then, I loved working with fibers
and textures.” Influenced by design classes at the University of Minnesota,
she decided to focus on the craft of weaving, delighting in rearranging patterns
and experimenting with colors. She later sought professional training in Sweden,
where she was drawn to the beauty of traditional designs and the durability of
the rep weave, a flat weave technique in which threads are tightly
interlocked. For the past 14 years, Kelly has been sharing her talents
through her business, Custom Woven Interiors, Ltd. Influenced by both Arts and
Crafts and contemporary design; she creates rugs, throws, and more. Her work is
charming and functional—and durable enough to be tossed into a washing
machine.

from the room for which she designed it.

influences. “I translate elements from period architectural details—brick and
stone masonry, stained glass, wrought iron—into woven textiles.”
