Kelly Marshall has always had a passion for textiles. “I started knitting at a young age,” she remembers. “Even then, I loved working with fibers and textures.”
Influenced by design classes at the University of Minnesota, she decided to focus on the craft of weaving, delighting in rearranging patterns and experimenting with colors. She later sought professional training in Sweden, where she was drawn to the beauty of traditional designs and the durability of the rep weave, a flat weave technique in which threads are tightly interlocked.
For the past 14 years, Kelly has been sharing her talents through her business, Custom Woven Interiors, Ltd. Influenced by both Arts and Crafts and contemporary design; she creates rugs, throws, and more. Her work is charming and functional—and durable enough to be tossed into a washing machine.

(a) Cool blues and grassy greens, with splashes of flamingo pink and sangria, form geometric patterns. (b) Kelly blends up to a dozen shades in one rug to wrap a room in color. (c) In her Minneapolis studio, she works magic at one of her four looms.

(d) “Winter Garden” springs to life on the loom in shades of moss, oak, and dill. Beginning with a sketch, (e) Kelly crafts “Winter Garden,” integrating earthy colors from the room for which she designed it.

(f) Kelly’s traditional patterns blend intricate texture with lush, rich colors. (g) The Arts and Crafts movement is one of her foremost influences. “I translate elements from period architectural details—brick and stone masonry, stained glass, wrought iron—into woven textiles.”
