name: Alyson Fox born: El Paso, Texas now living in: Austin,
Texas beginnings: As a kid, I was always drawing and reorganizing my room and
putting my stamp on things. My mom says that I would take her eye pencils, sit
in my closet, and draw with them. My sophomore year at Florida State University,
my grandmother suggested I take an art class because she thought I was creative.
That sealed the deal. I got my undergrad degree in photography and a graduate
degree in sculpture and installation at the University of Colorado. I had a lot
of support from my family, but they were also concerned about how I was going to
make a living.
artist’s statement
I can’t really describe what I do. I just like to make things. I make things
from paper, fabrics, books, ceramics, thread, wallpaper, office supplies,
photographs, old tattered stuff, new polished stuff, furniture, and cement. I
enjoy designing for commercial ends and no ends at all. I’m currently focused on
making an ongoing series of drawings that depict strange half-stories and
invented family histories.
an average day
I’m pretty obsessive about making new work and experimenting with materials
and ideas. Whenever I get stuck, I go to the thrift store for inspiration.
muse
I wake up early, go for a run, and eat a big breakfast. I check my email,
then write a list of what I need to do. If I don’t make a list, I’m all over the
place. Some days are more about making new work; others are about filling
orders. It depends. I draw every day. I love the process of sifting through
ideas and creating something.
next
For spring and summer of 2008, I’m designing an eco-friendly clothing line
using sustainable fabric (hemp, flax, organic cotton) decorated with
hand-printed designs. It’s just a few pieces and a couple of handbags, but I’m
really excited about it.
