name: Amy Rice born: LaKe Mills, Wisconsin now living in:
Minneapolis, Minnesota beginnings: My grandma Flo taught me how to embroider
when I was only two, and I distinctly remember the “aha moment” when I caught
on. My father is adept at traditional crafts like woodworking and welding, and
has an inherent sense of design. Everyone in my family encouraged me to pursue
art as a hobby, but no one wanted me to make a career of it. As a kid, I showed
my work at county fairs and was awarded with exhibition space at the Wisconsin
State Fair, which was very cool.
artist’s statement
I create most of my work using stencils that I design and cut myself.
It’s basically a form of printmaking, but I have the freedom to experiment with
color, surface texture, and the grouping of objects. I can set the mood and tone
so each piece is unique. As an art instructor and advocate for adults with
severe mental illness, I’m a true believer in art as a tool for healing.
an average day
Three days a week I work at Spectrum ArtWorks, a nonprof it program I founded
for adult artists living with mental illness. Other days, I meet with galleries
or go on art supply runs. I’m usually in my studio by one.
muse
I like to work at night, buzzed on good coffee while the rest of the
world sleeps. I put on my headphones, dance, make a big mess with my paints, and
play with my dog, Ella.
next
I’d like to do more community-based art projects, sharing my methods and
helping others to express themselves visually. There are a million ugly walls
that could be homes to beautiful masterpieces, and I want to help make that
happen. My goal is to open a center for adult artists with disabilities of all
kinds, and minimize the barriers to their art-making.
