name: Ann Wood born: Cherry Valley, Massachusetts now living in:
Brooklyn, NY beginnings: My parents were intensely creative people, and I was
encouraged to be engaged in and appreciative of the arts. My aunt, Rita
Burlingame, is also a huge influence and powerhouse of creativity. She collects
art and antiques, and when I was a kid she spent hours working on projects with
my younger sister and me. I use things she taught me daily, lately especially.
As I’m making more personal work and creating more things just for the joy of
it, her influence is unmistakable.
artist’s statement
I work mostly with found and salvaged materials, many of them vintage or
antique garments. There’s a kind of affection and tenderness in the reuse and
repurposing of things that were once personal, perhaps treasured, possessions.
Most of my inspiration comes from these materials as well as the ideas I’ve been
infatuated with my entire life: smallness; intricacy; collections; repetition;
lost or abandoned things discovered and rescued; and haunted or enchanted
places, things, and creatures.
an average day
My day always starts with coffee and correspondence. Managing my time
is a huge challenge. To make sure I fit in everything I want and need to
do, I plan my day the night before.
muse
I’ve always been mainly occupied with making things for films or advertising.
It’s only recently that I’ve begun to make personal work. A new awareness of
time’s passage has scared me into action. Now I assign myself to make
something personally creative each day.
next
Galison is publishing a holiday card featuring one of my bird photos. I enjoy
photographing what I make just about as much as I enjoy making it, so another
goal is to become a better photographer. I’m also working on a series of larger,
more life-inspired birds made from antique garments.
