name: Cheree Berry born: Bonne Terre, Missouri, 1977 education: Washington University in St. Louis, BFA now living in: St. Louis, Missouri beginnings: I loved art as a child, especially making posters. I had an endless supply of
poster board in all colors and if I got lost in Wal-Mart, my mom knew she could
find me with the art supplies. Instead of birthday cards or get well cards, I’d
make posters for my family and friends, and I loved customizing each one with
pasted-on 3-D designs such as flowers and butterflies. The first time I walked
into a Hallmark store, I was in awe, completely intrigued by all those cards in
different shapes and colors, lined up in neat little rows.
artist’s statement
As a stationery designer, I focus on the whimsical, such as envelope liners
based on vintage wallpaper or invitations that are either super large or teeny
tiny. I like to create unique, unforgettable stationery, the kind of thing that
stays on your fridge forever because it’s just too much fun to toss out.
Sophisticated, unexpected, bold yet sweet…that’s my style. I’m a perfectionist
when it comes to paper and I enjoy finding the perfect way to visually
represent every event.
an average day
I start my day at home, answering email inquiries and gathering estimates
for my custom clients. Then I walk to my office, where I might sketch an
illustration, format some text, line envelopes for a personalized stationery
order, package a job for an out-of-state client, or meet a newly engaged couple
in my showroom
muse
Living in New York as a designer for Kate Spade, I’d get some of my best ideas
while walking to work. I still do: My office is three blocks from home, with a
coffee shop in between. Besides walking and caffeine, I’m inspired by music (the
Shins) and books (I like Mark Haddon and anything by David Sedaris).

Last year was busy. I launched my own line, Cheree Berry Paper, and published my
first book, Hoorah for the Bra: A Perky Peek at the History of the Brassiere
(Stewart, Tabori & Chang). I’ll soon start working on a second book.
