name: Keiko Yagishita born: Chiba, Japan now living in: Minneapolis,
Minnesota beginnings: I started young, doing drawings for neighbors’ and
friends’ birthday cards and sometimes making “forgive me” cards for my parents
when I was bad. My entire family and all of my friends have been supportive from
day one. They continue to encourage me and they surrounded me with positive
energy.
I fell in love with screen printing while at Minneapolis College of
Art
and Design, where I got a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. I went on to study
printmaking in Italy, but my major influences are the colors and
patterns of
Japan.
artist’s statement
My art reflects what to me are the most extraordinary aspects of life: joy
and happiness. It’s all about expression. Although I’m always searching for
unique subject matter, it’s just a vehicle, a way to provide an opportunity for
people to experience the beauty in life. In my opinion, art doesn’t have to
convey any extravagant meaning. It’s enough that viewers smile and feel a sense
of peacefulness and bliss when they see my work. That’s what I like to
deliver.
an average day
Coffee, doodling, more coffee, until I get an idea that inspires me. On a
good day, I’ll spend four to seven hours in my studio before heading off to my
other job, which for now, sadly, pays the rent.

the best thing
The best thing about being an artist is getting
calls from complete strangers who want their dogs to model for me! The worst
part is the financial insecurity and not knowing my future status in the art
world.
next
I want to experiment more with graphics for various products, focus on fine art, and expand my subject matter. I'd also like to get my work out there by participating in small gallery showings throughout the country.
