artist and designers on our radar

name: Leigh Pennebaker
born: Star, Mississippi, November 29th, 1978
now living in: New York City
beginnings: As a kid, I spent hours upon hours drawing. I was a little art nerd, always fascinated by fashion and historical costumes. My father is an artist, so he was incredibly nurturing of my interest in art. Once, an adult admired some of my drawings and asked if I planned to be an artist when I grew up. I said haughtily, “I already am an artist.“ So I guess in addition to being sure of my career from an early age, I was also a smarty-pants.

artist’s statement
My sculpture deals with my lifelong fascination with fashion, women, and beauty. It’s a three-dimensional caricature through which I channel the spirits of Southern belles, divas, vixens, and ingénues. With each wire dress, I explore the presence of the female form and ges-ture without sculpting representations of actual body parts. Instead, I allude to physical bearing, spirit, and impulse through sculpted clothing. Each sculpture has its own name inspired by the distinct personality of the dress. No two pieces are alike in attitude or style.

an average day
My everyday routine varies a lot, depending upon whether I’m on deadline, working on the marketing aspects of my business, or just out roving the streets of New York for inspiration. I love to read, so I always work a book into my schedule.

muse
I always liked doing illustrations for my favorite books, like Little Women and The Secret Garden, and was a stickler for depicting the fashions in an historically accurate way. The best thing about being an artist is having your imagination as your boss. The worst part? Worrying about paying the rent.

I’m expecting my first child in May, so lots of creative energy is going into that. I hope to find new ways of working that can accommodate motherhood.
