name: Sarah Neuburger born: Normal, Illinois 1977 school: BA in Fine Arts
from Columbia College, Columbia, SC; MFA in Studio Art from the School of Visual
Arts, New York, NY now living in: Irmo, South Carolina beginnings: My
childhood was filled with adults who valued creativity. My grandmother was an
artist. If my mom wasn’t painting, she was baking or sewing. My aunt owned a
children’s boutique that sold my mom’s handmade toys. My dad studied
architecture, drew, and made the most wonderful valentines for my mom. I knew I
wanted to be an artist when I was in high school. South Carolina has a program
that allows students to take five weeks of art classes away from home, taught by
art educators. It was an amazing experience that really sealed the deal for me.
artist’s statement
I make little creatures out of clothespins and found stuff and run an online
shop called The Small Object. It’s a cottage industry for my own goods and
offers up delightful, eccentric, everyday objects—original artwork, paper goods,
housewares, and whatever else captures my fancy. Giving mundane objects an
artistic spin makes them even more wonderful and inspires a feeling that
anything is possible.
an average day
My home is my studio. I keep art supplies in my kitchen drawers! In the morning,
I check the orders I need to fulfill, etc. Then I work on whatever idea kept me
up the night before. The table is always littered with remnants of my current
project.
muse
My grandmother was a potter, painter, and shoe designer. She also put
cinnamon red-hot candies in my applesauce. I was so smitten with any adult that
let me eat candy at dinner that she became a rock star to me. I wanted to be
just as amazing as she was when I grew up.
next
I’m looking forward to traveling to more craft shows throughout the country,
including stops in Chicago, Brooklyn, Washington, D.C., and Savannah. I’m also
working on a couple of projects for Chronicle Books.
