quilter’s profile
“I learned to sew about the time I learned to write, and
the activities are similar—the sentences move along the page the way a line of
stitches moves through fabric,” says Angela Moll. Born in Spain, she holds a
Ph.D. in Spanish literature and studied quilting and surface design with artists
such as Nancy Crow and Jane Sassaman. Her fascination with Chinese brushwork,
medieval book arts, and family sewing traditions informs and enriches her
work.Angela Moll’s Secret Diary quilt series (2003-2005) provides “a look inside
the intimate space where journals are written and quilts are made,” she
says.
The “pages” are actual journal entries
screen-printed on
fabric,
layered, and
stitched
together. Except for a few
random words, the text
is
illegible,
“revealing just the
outline of a life story.”
