quilter’s profile
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve expressed myself through artwork,” says
Welsh artist Bethan Ash. “As a child, I was always drawing, painting, or
designing and cutting paper outfits for my cardboard cut-out dolls.”Her
formal training was in fashion, specializing in shoe design, but after a career
in the industry and the birth of her son, she discovered that quilt making best
expressed her personal vision. She’s been a quilt artist since 1980 and has
exhibited extensively, winning numerous international awards for her work.
“My work integrates my life experiences as an artist,” Bethan says.
“Incorporating my love of fabric and collage with my fashion training, I often
use random thoughts and symbols, and frequently work using a
stream-of-consciousness thought process.” (a) This piece was inspired by the
trials and tribulations of the dieting process and the current cultural
obsession with weight loss. “All my life, I’ve battled with my weight. I’ve
followed every diet under the sun, sometimes successfully, other times not!”
(b) This nine-block installation is first in a series inspired by Bethan’s move
from the city to suburbia. “I love the tactile qualities of cloth and the
unlimited color range made possible by hand dying and other surface design
techniques,” she says. “I enjoy new technology and like using the computer to
manipulate words and images and transfer them to cloth.”
