quilter’s profile
Danish-born Joan Frantz began quilting five years ago when a friend
introduced her to the rotary cutter. “A sucker for gadgets, I quickly became
addicted to working with fabrics and cutting them up,” says Joan, who lives in
Fort Myers, Florida. When one of her first quilts required a tricky gradation of
colors, she signed up for a fabric-dying class and now dyes virtually all of
the fabrics she uses in her prize-winning quilts. “I sometimes use acrylic and
oil paints, foil, and beads to further enhance the surface.”
“Firebirds,” made with hand-dyed cotton and silk, reflects the vivid hues and
lush vegetation of Florida’s western coast. “I was inspired by the Bird of
Paradise plants that grow in my own garden,” Joan says. “When the sun lights up
the flowers, they look like they’re on fire.”
