quilter’s profile
“I go to bed with a different painter every night,”
jokes Susie Swan. She’s talking about her favorite pastime: reading books about
artists such as Matisse and Modigliani, both of whom inspired a series of
embellished art quilts. Susie, who lives in Ojai, California, learned to sew
from her mother and grandmother when she was 6. “Interpreting the works of great
artists taught me about color and form, but now I’m making quilts based on my
own designs.”
“My love of Matisse and Modigliani inspired me to try some of their designs in
fabric.” (a) Susie often adds beads and ribbons to her quilts. (b) “Matisse made no apology about using decoration. Neither do I.” (c)
“Modigliani’s ‘Portrait of a Woman with Earrings’ looks like my friend Sharlene,
who introduced me to the work of so many artists. I made this quilt portrait for
her birthday.”
