For the Love of Book and Moms
April 10, 2008
By Ellen Gardner, Contributing Editor
The moment I learned Little Golden Books was the topic of the April-May
Finders Keepers column in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion, I was immediately transported back
many years ago to a small town in Ohio, where I rested my head in my mother’s
lap while she read to me.And read to me, and read to me. My sister,
Susan, tucked me under her arm and read to me, too, because I simply couldn’t
get enough. I guess it’s no surprise I grew up to be a writer. Of the many,
many wonderful gifts I received from my family, the love of books has got to be
near the top of the list. It defines who I am in so many ways, and it continues
to sustain me whenever I need to disappear into a novel and “recharge.” In my
own little way, I’ve tried to pass that gift along. When my girlfriends started
having babies, I’d always round up a pile of classic books for baby shower
gifts. When my stepdaughter and daughter-in-law were expecting, they got the
tried-and-true books, too. And God bless ‘em, they used those books. They read
to their kids every chance they get. It’s truly a gift that lasts a
lifetime. Here are some of my favorites:Pat the Bunny
by Dorothy Kunhardt, Goodnight Moon by Margaret
Wise Brown, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak,
The Best Word Book Ever by Richard Scary,
The Listening Walk by Paul Showers, Does a Kangaroo Have
a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle, Jamberry by
Bruce Degen, and most anything by Dr. Seuss. For other recommendations, visit
www.hedgehogbooks.com, a site
developed by teachers with “Top 10 Lists” arranged by age; www.parentsasteachers.org (search
for “suggested reading”); and www.childrensbooks.about.com,
where book lists are arranged by subject.

I noticed the book Jamberry in the picture.
I LOVE that book. I discovered it about 13
years ago when my 2nd son was a baby. I
always give that book as a baby gift.
Reading is such a great thing. I read to my
boys all the time, up through the 8th grade.
My younger son is in 8th grade now and we
still read chapter books together. Both my
boys grew up to be excellent readers and
writers with good spelling skills and large
vocabularies. Both have been spelling bee
champs in their schools. I know that the
daily reading my husband and I shared with
them had a huge impact on their love of
reading and writing.

There is no better gift than the love of
books! When my children were young, we would
go to book stores and the library often. We
had the best time just hanging out and
reading. Now that they are adults, we still
find time to stop by a Barnes and Noble to
grab a book and a cup of coffee.

After my father died, I came to realize that
one of the greatest gifts he'd given me was
the idea that reading was important &
worthwhile. That an afternoon spent reading
a book was an afternoon to be grateful for,
an afternoon to cherish.

Goodnight, Moon & Pat the Bunny are always
included with my baby gifts too! All our
children grew up to be readers (& good
students), thanks, no doubt, to the
household emphasis on reading. Now our
grandsons are learning the love of reading -
from infancy on.

Is anyone old enough to remember The Pokey
Little Puppy?

I love books, too! And especially the Little
Golden Books. Each and every one is a
classic, that generations of children have
loved. What better to read to a little one
than a book you loved yourself as a child? I
loved the column. Thanks for this great
post!

Does anyone remember Golden Books that had
paper dolls in them? I've had no luck
finding any.

I loved the Golden Books as a child and
shared many with my sons and now with my
grandson. The Golden Books were my
introduction into the wide world of
children's literature.
