The Sidewalks of the Central West End
March 27, 2008
By Mary Engelbreit, Editor in Chief
Finally!
We can see a little, teeny, tiny break in the weather here in St. Louis. It's
been a long extra-cold winter and I am absolutely sick of it. Our studio is in a
wonderful neighborhood called the Central West End, and at the smallest rise in
temperature, all the restaurants put some tables outside which are instantly
filled with determined people turning their faces to the sun, trying to pretend
it's not still freezing.
This
is the neighborhood where I had my first real, grown-up job, working in a small
ad agency. I worked right across the street from my current studio, as a matter
of fact. It was an incredibly fun place then and it still is. I'm so glad we're
back! There are a lot of really great places to eat and some truly magical shops
and antique stores and of course, my very favorite bookstore, Left Bank Books,
where I had my first art show so many years ago.
The neighborhood association has been so welcoming to us and I love participating in all the activities they arrange to promote the area. I've judged the wild Halloween costume event and have just illustrated the poster for their first annual Easter Parade and Spring Festival. Here it is (see photo below). As you can see, it's a fun neighborhood - you should check it out! Tell the Central West End I sent you.

Is there any chance for me to be listed as
one of your favorite blogs or websites. I
am a long time subscriber. Been with you
from the start. You are one of my
inspirations for beginning my own business.
THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION!!!

We visited your neighborhood a couple of
years ago on one of our yearly trips to St.
Louis from Kansas City. Mostly, it was a
yearly pilgrimage to your store in the
Galleria to stock up on cute things (with
list in hand for requested items for all the
teachers I work with). You can't imagine my
utter despair last week when we stopped
there on our way to our spring break
destination and found your store closed. I
had to have a moment of silence! It nearly
took my breath away to look in the windows
and find baseball jerseys-ugh! I know your
items are on-line now, but it's just not the
same. I also desparately miss your ceramic
everything (seasonal figurines, decor,
plates, bowls, teapots, etc.). Please say
they're not gone for good and please promise
your on-line store will be forever open.
Sincerely,

Mary,
LOVE your work..and always have. I just
taught 2 classes in St.Louis at For Keeps
Sake and wish I had seen your blog before I
came. The neighborhood sounds wonderful.
Does this mean your shop is open again? Hope
so, and will try to visit.

I hope to be able to visit the area some day
soon.
Mary, as my husband and I sat at our local
bookstore for hours last night, I browsed
through your book ARTFUL WORDS. My business
partner & I always are certain to by the
latest issue of Home Companion for
inspiration and insight, however looking
through this book was so tender and emotional
for me. I thought of my sweet grandmother
who has always loved and adored your work,
and mostly thought of my cousin Ashley who
worked for years Davis Kidd Bookstore and
always admired and bought your work. She
passed away a few years ago at 29, but the
memories just flooded through.
Thank you for all you do!
