The Queen of Moving Day

September 27, 2007
By Mary Engelbreit, Editor in Chief

Yes, it's true—I've moved again, out of one dream house (a house so dreamy, in fact, it warranted its own book!) and into another. Dreams change—after awhile we found ourselves longing for a smaller house, less stuff, and more kids in the neighborhood for Mikayla to play with.

After two big sales and many trips to Goodwill, we moved into our new little house with nothing but the things we really love. Everything I brought with me seemed to find its own perfect spot right away. I thought my collection of marble and plaster busts would be the biggest problem—I was going to stick them all over the house, wherever they would fit. They were sitting in the kitchen, just unpacked, when the painters put them all on the mantel to get them out of the way. They're still there, looking great, I think.

I have to say, it's pretty wonderful to walk into a house (especially one of mine!) and see nothing extraneous, nothing that doesn't look like it should be exactly there. Tabletops we can actually put something down on, bookshelves that have room for more books (although I've started going to the library again—let them deal with where to put all those volumes). I don't miss a single thing I got rid of, and lately I’ve been thinking twice— even three times!—before I buy something new. (Although I've found that if you’re still thinking about something past three times, you should probably go back and get it.) Maybe it won't last, but at this moment I'm really loving my serene, simple, relatively empty new little house. You'll be able to check it out yourselves soon in a future issue of HOME COMPANION. Stay tuned to see if I've totally junked it back up again by then!

Add Mary Engelbreit’s Blog To Your Technorati Faves Technorati

Just went through my emails and found out about the blog!!!! Wonderful. A few months ago we moved across country and downsized to a floating homes as well. I had collected dishes, glassware, fabric, crafts, dolls and stuff for years. It had to go, not enough room. At first I cried when I thought of parting with some of my collections. But not anymore!!!! Picked out my very favorite pieces. Gave things to close family and friends. Had 2 big yards sales and many trips to the Missing Childrens thrift store with donations. It was the best thing I have ever done. I don't miss all and now I have time for new hobbies since I am not dusting so much. Can't wait to see your new home in the magazine. Thanks for the blog.

Sounds like you've done a great job, Mary! I'll have to go with that advice of Goodwill, keep what you love, and don't buy on the lst whim! (3 thoughts and go back to get it) Crammed into a fairly large house and feeling trapped.........Wynne

I too have entered that stage of longing for a little less stuff and rooms to arrange, and yet plenty of space for those grandchildren (that are surely going to come one day.) The current hurdle is purging the piles and pounds of stuff that have accumulated over 23 years. There's something to be said about a year round dumpster in the driveway, don't you think?

WOW!!! You really are the serial decorator you described yourself in a recent issue. Can't wait to see the newest place and all the great ideas to copy:) Love the idea of a ME blog!!!!

Wow, you've moved again? Sounds like my childhood, we moved every other year it seemed! Now that I'm ...err your age (I was going to say older) I refuse to move! Which means mountains of loved items! I think I need to move to thin my collections out, it appears that works for you! Thanks for the nod to get simple again! Love the new blog! I know what you mean about downsizing and having just what you want/need and no excess. I moved from a big 3 room house to my little townhouse on the lake, 650 sq ft, and we put bookshelves on every wall you see. I have the biggest, greatest bookshelves for my books and work manuals. I designed my own desk out of a 10-ft. kitchen counter with filing cabinets beneath to replace the dining area (we have TV trays now) and everything had a place. What didn't went to Goodwill. Life is too short to clutter it up with excess. I love the little places. You can clean in no time, and it's all right there, not miles down the hall! Enjoy that new home. You'll love it!

oh happy day! so fun to see a Mary blog! congrats on the move, can't wait to see more pictures! xo www.paigeknudsen.blogspot.com xo

The word downsizing has filled me with dread because I too have so many collections. Each piece was such fun to collect but now I realize that these are my collections and my grown children probably will not treasure them at all! So good to hear your thoughts on the process - all of us boomers want to hear and see more. But please tell me the beach house is still intact!

Moving is so cleansing and therapeutic - and so horrible at the same time. But doesn't it feel so good to weed through the clutter. Can't wait to see pictures and welcome to blogging!

Oh, Mary, if I could only catch your clearing out attitude. I mean, I shop at GoodWill to bring stuff home, imagine that? 50+ houseplants being brought inside now and with my new mosaic interest, you know why I go to GoodWill. Thanks for your energy; who knows, maybe it will rub off.

I don't feel so bad, we built our dream house four years ago, it is wonderful but rather large. I am hoping we to can weed out what we love and move to a small cottage to fix up. Thanks so much for the inspiration, and for this wonderful blog. Lori Dee......

Hello! A fellow new blogger, (and new ME subscriber), I hadta giggle at your post -- usually trying to resist the 'junk up my space' urge, too! It's fun, isn't it?! Looking forward to following along here!
Posted By: http://brenda-backyardgarden.blogspot.com/

congratulations on your move Mary. :O) Can't wait to see pieces of it. I'm from England, but I manage to get copies of your fab magazine thanks to an American friend. I absolutely agree about downsizing the amount of 'stuff' in ones home. Every few months or so, I go through my home and give unwanted items to charity. It means my home is neater, and the charity gets something to sell and make money. welcome to the world of blogging too, it's going to be nice reading what you are up to.
Posted By: sadie

I'm eager to see your new home in a future Home Companion issue and the recent changes you made with items you sold and donated. Looking forward to your new look and reading the blogs.
Posted By: JESA

Mary, I really like your new hair cut. Very flattering. And the busts look great. You've inspired me so many times. Thanks Ann
Posted By: Boomershine.Peters@sbcglobal.net

I certainly agree about not putting all the 'stuff' back into a new house, even as I am moving to a bigger house. I have'nt had to buy anything. And everything that is still stored in the garage I must not need because it it still packed in there. I am determined not to bring it in unless I can't live without it!
Posted By: E

Good for you, Mary! I think moving is the only way to really let go of a lot of stuff...and the best part of it is that you get to start over looking for new stuff! I honestly think that is why we move. At my age, I really wanted a cottage, but we wound up with a larger place and I still have junk. I am worn down with it all. I unloaded my dear antiques to a much younger friend who adores antiques, so I know they have the best home. Have fun! A St Louis fan.
Posted By: Pat Viamontes Verdebirds@aol.com

welcome to life on the other side of the mountain, one of the reasons I have so loved your work is that we seem to be in the same time, I have been downsized for two years and I love my less cluttered life mostly because it gives me so much time to make and enjoy new friends
Posted By: Jan Douglass

Congrats on the new Blog and your new move! I love the busts on your mantle...I am in the process of down sizing too. I am a mosaic artist and the hardest place in my home to keep de-cluttered is my studio. :-) Website: www.lavenderhillstudio.com Blog: http://lavenderhillstudio.blogspot.com

Hello Miss Mary! Congrats on your new blog!! (and your move) I hope you're still enjoying your cupcake!

Mary, I love cozy and it's very hard to make big cozy. Best wishes in your new home. I have recently gained a new room in my home - my daughter went away to college. So I have turned room into a craft room and I will admit it is full of ME treasures and colors. It is the most cozy room in the house and everyone loves hanging out in it.

Love the idea of a ME blog! And my favorite feature articles in the magazine have ALWAYS been the ones featuring YOUR home. Exciting to have a new one to show us. I hope you'll put more photos on the blog, too! I love that you've remained so real and down-to-earth in spite of your huge success.
Posted By: Deb at kansasprairiegarden.blogspot.com

Mary, I followed your moves through your magazines. Each time your house is prettier and prettier. I have moved many times too but I always take a bit of ME with me. I'm so thrilled about your blog. I think Blogland is just about complete now! http://shessewpretty.typepad.com/

Congratulations on your new, little home, Mary. My sentiments echo yours. We recently purchased a small townhouse as a second home; it's my doll house and I love it. Everything surrounds me and doesn't seem like too much or too out of reach. It has given me thoughts of perhaps selling my large, first home and doing exactly what you said--ridding myself of a lot of things that either I don't need or want. Life changes and we should, too. I can't wait to see your new doll house!
Posted By: Linda (lcotroneo@bentley.edu)

Sure do know how you feel about streamlining! Wish I had accomplished it - after almost 20 years in one house, raising 4 children there and renovating it to exactly how we wanted it, we moved to a house almost twice the size in another state. I didn't get anything cleaned out before we moved! Then we expanded to fill the house (of course); but 4 years later, we moved again to a much smaller house, again in another state. Add child who is temporarily home post grad school who had an apartment full of stuff and I am full to overflowing!! Slowly I am cleaning out and giving away. And I definitely look 2 or 3 times before I buy anything new - even though I see soooo many things I like. If you can do it, maybe can I, too. Thanks for being you. :)

I was so excited to hear that you are choosing to simplify your life. I have become a big fan of the idea that Less is More. Simplicity can be so attractive and reduces stress. I am a fan of Wanda Urbanska from Simple Living TV. Maybe she would be a fun person to feature in your magazine sometime. Have fun and thanks for many enjoyable years of Home Companion.

How wonderful that you are now blogging! I am in England but I receive your magazine and look forward to pouring over the pages as soon as it hits the mat. Having just renovated our house I know how much joy smaller homes can bring. The busts look great as I'm sure the rest of the house does.

WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST IN YOUR NEW HOME, YOUR NEW BLOG & ALWAYS! AND MARE, CAN YOU SCATTER A FEW MORE OF YOUR LITTLE DRAWINGS THROUGHOUT THE MAGAZINE AGAIN. IT IS VERY HEARTWARMING TO TURN A PAGE & SEE ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS SITTING ON TOP OF THE CORNER OF A PAGE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TALENT WITH SO MANY. BLESS YOU.
Posted By: MARY LOUISE

Hi Mary, I'm so glad to hear about simplifying your home. I've been wrestling with my inner need for peace and open space versus my packrat style books/collection/ME treasures, etc. My solution was to clear the living spaces except for my small office alcove that is filled with all of my most treasured items. When I feel a need for my stuff I can sit there with it all close at hand--then I can walk into my clutter-free living room and feel good. Your blog validated my decision! BTW, I have the book about your dream home and I'm hard pressed to see how you could leave it. Doesn't life bring new and unexpected situations to us? I'm so looking forward to a book about the new house. The mantle is perfect for the busts!!
Posted By: June/California

Don't you love a smaller nest? I did the same thing three years ago, and haven't looked back once. I love having just my most favorite, very special treasures around me. And I use EVERYTHING. I got rid of plastic food containers and use my old metal-lidded Ball jars for food storage. We never used the living room, so we don't have one now. Oh,you'll love it! Can't wait to hear more about it. Cheers...

Hi Mary, I'm moving too, into my dream home. I'm packing up everything ME and taking the rest to Goodwill. One day my home will be a ME showroom. I love it....Tracy

I bought my (large) dream home 8 yrs. ago, but your magazine has inspired me to look forward to retirement in a small cottage. I've been weeding out a lot of things I no longer consider my style, and have slowly begun to collect cottage pieces that I love. By the way, I'm an Acquisitions Librarian, and I quickly learned that it's better to return my reading material right back to the library's shelves.

Congratulations on the new blog and the new home - I am sure you will love it and we will look forward to seeing snippets of it from time to time in Home Companion

Recently my sweetie husband and I moved from a large three story monster to 978sq.feet. We unloaded tons and continue to everyday. What a great feeling to let go of STUFF! I love your magazine so what about doing some small space decorating and storage ideas. Please be aware that your magazine is NEVER something I get rid of.
Posted By: Betsy

From the Beginning...I bought the first issue of Home Companion and have been hooked! I love the magazine so much that I promised my bestfriend of 35 yrs. that I would buy her a subscription until the day I die. We live in Minn. and she is in Okla. and we don't see each other often enough, but as soon as we get our Home Companion's we call each other and go through the magazine together. I have been interested in finding out how to submit my work to the magazine for any of the features you have. I am a quilter/teacher and have a pattern company, stitch 321. My web site is under works, but my blog is www.kellygoldsworthy.typepad.com if you or any of your staff have time to visit me. If you click on 'photo alley' you can see my work. Thanks, for truly, the BEST MAGAZINE out there. It allows me my time of peace and total relaxation and joy when I receive it in the mail. I can't wait to see me of your house in an upcoming issue. We have moved 12 times for my husbands job. I can't imagine moving because you want to, but I do know that each place and house adds something new to your heart and soul and that 'something' is carried with you onto the next place to be called 'home'. Moving has made me a better person. For us, a house just isn't a house. It is our HOME...a place that reflects us and gives us roots. I would love to hear from you what your different homes have meant to you and your family.

What Fun. A Mary E Blog. My blog list just keeps getting bigger. Looking forward to lots of fun.

Mary, I love the new blog. Can't wait to see photos of the new house - congratulations! I love YOUR decorating style, and confess that my favorite issues of HOME COMPANION are the ones that feature YOUR HOME spaces! It has been fascinating to watch what items make the cut into each new house, and to see how you re-purpose things in your decorating! I'm slowly learning to become more discerning about what I purchase to fill our home. I love to be surrounded by things that are meaningful to me, are beautiful, or that evoke a memory - but there just isn't room for it all. This is something that I'm trying to teach my children as well (hoping that they will learn it earlier in life than I did!) Thanks for your inspiration!

Looking forward to reading your blog!!!

I too am paring down, sorting out, deciding what is really important. I am leaving a 30 year marriage and moving into a 2 bedroom apartment. I am excited--scared to death-- but excited too! I find the hardest part for me is moving my art supplies. I am a jewlry artist, art quilter and collage artist and that's a lot of stuff that I just can't get rid of! I would appreciate your ideas, Mary, on how to handle this!!
Posted By: Deborah

OK, where the heck was I when you had your yard sales? It would have totally been worth the trip across the country! Having just moved back into a big house after 1 year in a tiny apartment, I'm finding that I don't want a lot of stuff anymore! My family & friends are thrilled with my leftovers! Congrats, Mary...and happy housewarming! Cyn
Posted By: Cyn Mittel

I,too, moved a year ago downsizing and getting rid of lots of treasures, so I thought. I have not missed a thing, except enough wall space to put all my lovely art. I'm working on that. All the closets are still full, because we don't have the storage space we had, so I need to head to the Goodwill again soon. I love your magazine and your calendars. My daughter-in- law gives me one of your calendars every year and I just took some of my favorite through the years and framed them for my kitchen. They are adorable. The lady at the frame shop said all the customers who saw them wanted them. You are very much adored and love. Thanks.

I'm here through my friend Sara. You have been a huge inspiration to her in her art, and she has been an inspiration to me. I'll be sure to add your blog to my list, and AMEN, AMEN, AMEN to decluttering and simplifying your home!

I love the busts on the mantle!! What good painters you must have...I'm so glad that you have a blog. I've always loved your art and your magazine. They are definitely treasures in my book. I'll have to link to you and of course, I'll be back! I wish you and your family much happiness in your new home. xxoo, Dawn

Hi Mary! I am so glad you are blogging! What a great way for me to keep up with my favorite artist. You have really inspired me over the years. I look at your work daily on a calendar in my studio. I know what you mean about holding on to stuff. I live in a cottage style house and space is something we lack. I have to clean out on a regular basis! I look forward to seeing your house in the upcoming issue.

Hello dear Mary, Congratualtions on a new smaller home. I did that just two years ago and have not looked back. I have collected a few more pieces since then, but nothing that does not fit into it's place. Love your mag and I know I will enjoy your blog. Looking forward to more every week, Hugs Cindy

I was wondering when you would move again! Congratulations - can't wait to see the photos. I'm spending more time in the library these days also, ran out of space to put books. Never lived in a huge house, like the togetherness of a small one. You look great in the photo.
Posted By: Ann in MD

Best of luck in your new dream house.I absolutely love the white marble statues on the mantle - don't move them, they are perfect. My husband and I just had our 2nd garage/driveway sale. It was for 3 days and we were both exhausted, what with cleaning out the house and the garage. Everyone who came wanted to know if we were moving -that's how much stuff we had, even furniture on the lawn. After the 2nd day, I started to remove even more stuff, I never realized how much we had collected. The things that didn't sell we gave to Visiting Nurse Assoc. who is having a huge sale next month. It was hard for me to part with a lot of things but if I wasn't using it, looking at it, or wearing it, what was the purpose? So now I think before I buy something, and ask myself do I really need that or will it just hang around. I'm also considering using my library card again and not buying so many books - I don't want the clutter. Can't wait to see how you decorate - looking forward to seeing your new home in your magazine.

Hi Mary! I was thrilled when Charlotte posted that you had a new blog! Congratulations on your new home. I don't move often, but much to my husband's dismay, I want every house the goes up for sale in our neighborhood. Oh, the things we could do with that house! Meanwhile, after 11 years, I'm still not even close to done with the decorating of this house! I have a little art blog (http://dudadaze.blogspot.com) that I started a few years ago after picking up a pencil/ paintbrush for the first time at the ripe old age of 40! I was inspired to do so after seeing your magazine in a dentist's office and falling in love with it. I'd love for you to visit my blog sometime, but understand that you are probably the busiest woman in the world! I'll be back often to see what's new. xo Diane Duda

Mary, I am so envious. I have enjoyed viewing your other homes in your wonderful magazine and I know you will love this one just as much. Maybe you'll even stay for awhile. That is my goal someday-a perm. residence!
Posted By: Diana C,

Mary, I remember reading about when you moved into your last house and got rid of a lot of things but then realized it wasn't you and started collecting again. I LOVED it. I moved to FL. and into a 1930's cottage after going through a divorce. It's about 1,000 square feet. I had simplicity at first but found it boring. I added some collections and it feels more like me, much more homey. It's not overwhelming to me, I've just surrounded myself with things I really enjoy. Plus I think the hunt is half the fun. I'm afraid it's just in my blood.I'm a hopeless collector and love it!!! hahahah Anyway, enjoy, however you decide to decorate the new place.

Mary - as a professional organizer, I have to say I'm very proud of you. It sounds like you and the family are very happy in your new (smaller) home and I wish you and yours all the best. I can't wait to see the newly organized home in a future issue. Good luck!

Hey Mary! I can't believe you moved yet again! (well...maybe I can...) I hate moving! My husband moved us all over the country and I NEVER want to move again. Am looking forward to reading the new blog and seeing your new spaces!

Oh NO!! I loved your home. I had to sell my dream home to move to another state to take care of my mother. I cried(alone) for two years. I had lost my home, friends and job to make the move. Well I'm now in a much smaller house and way less stuff. BUT I still have my mother and a wonderful husband of 35 years who is busy fixing up our little cottage. And I'm so happy. Looking forward to seeing your new duds.

Dear Mary, Happy Days to you and yours in this new home. Gradually, my old collecting habits returned. Just sort of sneaked back...when I wasn't looking. (smile) Lory

And what gorgeous Junk it is! lol Tracy

Mary - You look mah-ve-lous!! Whatever you're doing - keep it up! How many Goodwills are there in St. Louis?? I could find someone to go and look for me!! ;-) Isn't it interesting that as we approach a certain point in life we start to think about down-sizing? Take good care, Mary!! Met you almost 2 years ago (Nov) at a book signing at the Rainy Day Book Store in Kansas City area. I was one of two girls from Nebraska who took the afternoon off and drove about 4 hrs one way to meet you! It was worth it! Thanks!!

It must be the age thing! Congratulations on your new home. We are the same age and I am also moving to a smaller home but have lived in this second home 30 years. I have been a collector, auction goer, saver of everything, etc. all my life. I am also getting rid of my extras that I have found I can live without. Great idea about going back to library as my biggest problem was I was living in a library! I had to have every book I saw and liked! Including your books which I have a lot(not getting rid of them though! Still must collect!) My favorite was your autobiography as I couldn't believe that we both liked the old illustrations of the fairy tale books. Hope to meet you some day! That is my wish for the future. Thanks for all the joy you have brought with your illustrations.

Can't wait for the issue with your new home. I am trying to part with stuff, but not ready to leave this wonderful old farmhouse (pre 1840)! Just have way too much stuff around. I could use you and your skills right here in Vermont! Been a fan since the first issue of Home Companion - love it! If you want to do a farmhouse in Vermont, come see me! Thanks for the inspirations. Also love the new hair cut, makes you look younger! And this blog is great!

Happy Days in your new house. I just wanted to say that one of the most important things you said was about going to the Library instead of filling up bookshelves. I love books...and that's why I love Libraries. Much more green of us to utilize our Libraries instead of piling up more and more books and buying, buying, buying when there is a large building overflowing with every book you could ever want. Keep up with the Library and good luck.

Oh Mary! I can truly relate, except the home we built was out of necessity but ended up our dream home! We built it out of logs and set it snugly into a stand of poplars. I brought only the bare essentials from the old home, furniture and clothing. It was so nice to have more room! We went from a 800sq foot home for 5 people to a much larger one. I love filling this place with things but they are carefully picked and thought over before we bring them in. No clutter in this home.! I learned the art of purging and don't miss anything we left behind. I have no problem parting with anything anymore and if someone else can use something I have more than I, they get it. A BIG hello from Northwestern Ontario Canada! Love this website and wish I could purchase your magazine.

Dear Mary...My mom sent me my first Home Companion when I was living in Ohio. It had the article with your mom and my cousins Aunt Betty. It was great to a familiar face in the magazine and even more exciting to see sipits of home. I have been hooked ever since. We moved back home, to St. Louis three years ago and I still adore your magazine. I remember years ago seeing you at the Pasta House in the Galleria...my mom said there is Mary. I also feel like I know you because my cousin was in your class at Viz. My husband cleaned the basement and threw away all my old Home Companions...so I guess it isn't always great to de-clutter!!! (P.S. I have never blogged before)

Mary, I am about to do the same. Next month my husband and I are moving from the house where we raised the kids to a small 1300 sq ft home. I am excited to get rid of some of the stuff. You have inspired me. It will be nice to lighten the load. We are renovating an old house and it is nice to get excited again about a new home, new town and meeting new friends. I think it will be good for us in this mid life age. I will be back with an update in a month. I have been a fan for YEARS. I have kept all of my Home Companions and look through them often. I even had a Scottie for 14 years because of you. Thank you, Sadie was a good dog. Always a ME fan.

NO, Mary, it's not junk!! It's never junk-- say it isn't so. I hope you get bored and have all that fun antiquing again and filling your new place!!! Just keep a little space for Bible Study or meditation and that should be enough serenity for anyone!! I love your stuff!!

I am really glad you got rid of some stuff. I enjoyed your magazine, but the houses were just TOOOOO gushy for my taste. I also collect but I collect figurines and they are hard to display. Please do an article about flower/floral frogs.

So happy to see you have a blog Mary. I found out about it on Charlotte's blog and I jumped right on over here to check it out. Glad to see that you are down-sizing and getting rid of all the excess too. I'm in the process of doing the same, but worried that I'll miss whatever I get rid of. Still I feel it's all too much and it's weighing me down. I wonder if this is a feeling that comes at a certain age. Who knows? But I find the purging process to be rather freeing. Can't wait to see your new home featured in the Magazine. http://jeanneszewczyk.blogspot.com

If you moved out of that house . . . can I still look at my book? This isn't a forest and trees scenerio is it? You've been a huge inspiration since I saw your home in Victoria Magazine in 1987. Thank you.

Hello Mary! Glad you've joined the world of bloggers... it's addictive, you know, and such good fun! And good luck with the new house; hope you're not still surrounded by packing boxes 5 years later! (Mine are in my attic!)

Congratulations Mary - on your new home which I can't wait to see pictures of - and on being able to part with your stuff!!!! I'm still trying to downsize but finding it difficult, especially when you show us such wonderful things in the magazine - I want many of them too! However, a small cottage home such as mine does have its limitations - garden rooms are now the only way to go. Thanks for inspiring us with so much beauty - your magazine continues to be one of the very best. So glad you now have a blog too - will be back to check your's and hope you have time to visit me! http://devondesigns-mary.blogspot.com/

Thank you for this. Right now I am in the midst of trying to get rid of items either thrift pickup or garage sale. We are planning on moving to Georgia and I really want to start fresh, this time without the clutter. I am changing careers to become a chef, at age 53 going back to school, moving from a place I have lived for 35 years and for the first time without a job to go to. This was a choice I have made voluntarily and it still is rough going. Many changes and letting go of the rooms full of stuff seems to be the most difficult for me. I have one more month to get through all of it. I love your magazine and have been a fan of your artwork and wonderful lookout on life. Please continue with all the wonderful things you do. I think I have everyone of the paperdolls. I have them as book markers!

Hi Mary! I hopped over here from sweet Charlotte's place and I wanted to welcome you into Blogland! You are going to LOVE it and we are certainly going to LOVE having you be a part of it! xo, Kim Daisy Cottage http://deardaisycottage.typepad.com/

I discovered you in 1988 when my family and I transferred here Carmel, Indiana. I found a soulmate in your blending of words and art when I studied your work at the kiosk in Union Station. I used you to inspire students to create illuminated manuscripts for their mothers to treasure. Now I have retired from teaching, and I find as I am enjoying your blog that you are thinking as I have been about things. As I grow into this new role in life, you are leading the way again! Thanks, Mary, for years of communicating with my spirit and adding the finishing touches to many important moments over the years.

I love it!!!!!!! The mantel is wonderful. I'm so glad I can go on line at lunch and have a very refreshing break. Thank you .

Well this is my first Blog entry ever! I am so excited at your willingness to change - it's a creative thing - believe me! Think of how many 'hunters' will now enjoy your trinkets! And the creative process just keeps moving on! I can tell just by that little picture that the house is Mary Charming as the fireplace mantle ledge has some charming curves to it! May you find laughter as you play 'house', and may love abound with every new trinket that finds its way to your nest!

Hi Mary, We just went through a downsizing move too. I, like you, parted with many things. I love my new place and so do my husband and our dog. It is so nice to look around and just see the things you love instead of all the clutter! Enjoy-

Mary- I met you many years ago at the Gift Show in NY when we both were represented at that time by Stan Cohen at Creatif Licensing. I have always been a fan. You really set the path straight for other designers to license their artwork and I thank you for sticking to your guns about copyright notices and the like with your clients. Congrats on your blog...I just started mine a few months ago so I am new to this whole blogging venture. Still designing and loving the life of an artist, raised 3 amazing daughters and have 9 little munchkins now, so life is continually creative and good! best, carol eldridge www.caroleldridge.typepad.com
