There’s no place like home. Or, as Mary Engelbreit might say, “There’s no place
like homes.”Mary and her family have moved three times in the past 10 years.
“The last place was too large and a lot of work to maintain,” she explains. “The
place before that was too new—we never really warmed up to it. The one before
that was so big that a friend of one of my sons was living there for a week and
I didn’t even know it.” This time, “we wanted to scale back to something a
little more manageable,” she explains. “We also wanted a neighborhood where our
daughter, Mikayla, could run around and ride her bike safely. Our old street
took so many twists and turns that I worried about her every time she went out
to play. Now we’re in a cul de sac.”
(1) A silk appliqué pillow from the 1920s. “It had been turned into a muff,
but I undid the stitches.” (2) In the living room, Flower guards Mary’s
favorite, ‘30s-inspired chair. “It’s old-fashioned with a modern twist, and so
comfortable.” Chair, Mitchell Gold.
(3) The light, airy living room and dining room. “I wanted a parsons table in the
dining room, but couldn’t find one big enough that wasn’t sagging in the middle.
So I had it custom made.” Rug, The Rug Market. Coffee table, Shine Home.
(4) “Phil thinks of the den as his room,” Mary says. “It’s cozy, and all
the dark furniture fits here.” (5) Homes, sweet homes. (6) Mary used a lot of yellow, orange, and pink as accent colors. “I was
going for an open, cheerful feel.” The mood is easy and informal. (7)
Phil, who does most of the cooking, approves of the small kitchen. “Everything
is close and convenient for him,” Mary says. Rug, Dash & Albert.
