Wherever you wander on the Tallman property, you're likely to encounter a
surprise. Indoors, it could be a quirky wood bead chandelier, the intriguing
texture of burlap covering an Art Deco chair, or pine cones dangling as tassels
from curtains. Outdoors, designer Tamara Crocker (aided by landscape installer
Pat Novotny) throws in double takes at every turn: eggplant growing in
wheelbarrows, discarded children’s furniture peeking out among vines, tiny
pumpkins creeping onto porches, water features where you’d least expect them.
“You discover subtleties as you go along,” Candra says. “It’s not the kind
of place that hits you over the head all at once. The experience is more of a
journey.”

decorative cow troughs and washtubs. (s) Bountiful blooms delight the eye,
adding splashes of color to stone urns on the hotel’s front porch. (t) At a
long harvest table, guests often spill over from the nearby Blue Wing Saloon
& Cafe. The hotel is also a popular spot for family reunions. (u) Custom
Adirondack chairs (gathered around a table made from a walnut stump and wine
barrel) invite hours of garden gazing.
