Soon after Mark and Krissy met in 1986, he announced that he’d bought a one-way
plane ticket to Bali. “I just assumed I’d never see him again,” Krissy recalls.
Imagine her surprise when he called a year later to say he was back in San
Francisco. As the relationship grew, they pursued careers in corporate retail.
But by 1993, Mark was restless again—and so was Krissy. Learning of a business
opportunity in Oregon, they moved north and opened their first specialty gift
shop, Terra Firma.

lights. She asked a seamstress to fringe the tablecloth up to almost two feet,
for a light-enhancing cascade effect. (e) Sari fabric serves as a table
