Thanks to a bevy of talented designing moms, the bedrooms on these pages are
loaded with as much personality as the kids who inhabit them. When we asked for
tips on how to create cool kids’ rooms, practicality topped the list.
“Aesthetics are great, but you have to be realistic,” says Oregonian Krissy
Millner. When daughter Hannah’s wall-to-wall white carpet was one slumber party
away from being trashed, Krissy bought an inexpensive pink area rug (
c) that can withstand pizza stains and marathon dance parties. Don’t
design for yourself, advises Trenna Travis Lange, Hadley’s mom and HomeCompanion
contributing editor. “The whole point is, it’s not about you, it’s about
them!” And remember, kids are fickle. They change their minds as often as
they change their sneakers, so choose a theme (and furnishings) they can grow
into.

vintage settee once belonged to her great-grandma. (b) Hannah Millner, 13,
and her skater bro, Haydn, 11, jump for joy. “Kids need love more than they need
a bunch of stuff,” says their mom.

and seashells create a dreamy glow in Hannah Millner’s bedroom. Showing
impeccable taste at 13, she selected a pale blush lamp base with a chocolate
shade from her parent’s Oregon furniture store, Terra Firma Home. A platform bed
adds to the room’s fresh, modern vibe. Hannah stashes mementos in the drum of
her Plexiglas-topped nightstand.
