Kaari’s go-to palette is usually “a bit of black balanced by a splash of red
in every room, to help rest the eye.” She keeps it pretty subtle most of the
time.
“But restraint flies out the window during the holidays,” she admits.
“Christmas is my license to pull out the stops and do whatever I want.” Every
room in the house glows with cranberry or rose, cherry red or dusty pink, even
coral—anything red-based. It never looks overdone, as evidenced by the daybed,

silk panel. Vintage pressed leaves

indoors.

Kaari, whose latest book is French-Inspired Jewelry, loves to take holiday decor
beyond the usual pit stops. Instead of focusing solely on the tree, fireplace
mantel, and front door, she also adorns the open shelves of her dining room
hutch, which she decks out with crab apples on cake stands, candy canes, and
crimson apertif glasses. “It’s more work, but it’s worth the
effort,” she says. A big wreath over the bed, (n) is another festive
touch, and its bow coordinates with the patchwork quilt, which was created from
the turn-of-the-century French ticking, linen, and florals for which Kaari’s
shop is known. “I haul out all my vintage red textiles and go to town,” she
says. “Focus on creating a cozy feeling—resist the urge to make everything
perfect.”
