Located in the heart of Hollywood, Pom Pom Interiors is ready for its
close-up. Opulent chandeliers gleam in every corner, casting a soft glow upon
piles of seashells. A sumptuously dressed bed beckons. The woman behind the
magic is owner Hilde Leiaghat (HomeCompanion, December ’03/January ‘04), who opened the
home furnishings boutique with her husband, Reza, in 1989. Since then, the
Belgium-born designer has held steadfast to her decorating mantra: Choose large
pieces—sofas, chairs, dining room tables, buffets—in neutral shades like cream
and oatmeal, and add color with accessories. “It’s like having great bone
structure,” she says. “When you start with something good, accessorizing only
makes it look better.”
(a) Think outside the curio cabinet. Shell collections in glass jars dazzle atop a hutch. A local artist made the seashell-studded lamps and mirrors. “It’s her therapy!” Hilde says with a laugh.
(b) Mercury glass beads in an etched vase lend sparkle when tucked into a hutch. Tiny starfish add texture to the plate underneath. (c) Hilde Leiaghat, pretty in pink. (d) Simple groupings in dreamy pinks and creams create a romantic desktop vignette.
(e) For a Pom Pom dining room display, Hilde grabbed a staple gun and a few yards of inexpensive fabric and made cushion covers and a floral table runner, taking color cues from the blue roses on a 1920s Italian chandelier. (f) Cote Table dishware complements the room’s French country ambiance. (g) A napkin from the store’s new linen line, Pom Pom Maison, features a ruffled tuxedo edge.
