On a scavenging expedition for Red, Carolyn and Nikki found a set of lights used
on Hollywood film sets during the 1950s and ‘60s. On the same expedition, they
discovered several huge film reels. “We loved the way this stuff looked—the
glamour suggested by the lights, the clean, graphic lines of the reels,” Carolyn
recalls. So she and Nikki, inspired by what was emerging as a Hollywood
theme, developed a script to guide them as they decorated the guesthouse. “Our
heroine was a young woman who was nostalgic for the Hollywood of a bygone
era—Grace Kelly in a chiffon gown, Cary Grant in a tux, that kind of thing. Then
we took it to the next level: What if all of this show-biz memorabilia had
belonged to the girl’s late grandmother, a famous movie star?” That was the
key to their script. “When we turned it into a story about family, it became
something that Mom and I could really relate to,” Nikki says.
