WHIMSY TO SPARE
(a) From the curvy granite backsplash to old dormer windows that double as cabinet doors, this space combines new ideas with an old aesthetic

OLD WORLD AURA
(b) To age the new pine cabinets, Sonja used gesso, a product found in artsupply stores. Flanking the range, are two beadboard panels she distressed and hung herself. She tucked vintage bird prints behind the dormer window’s panes and into ‘40s frames. Wire flowerpot holders stow spices.

HOODWINKED
An old French coal stove cover hides the range’s exhaust vent. Decorative screening adds to the illusion. Stove, Dacor. Refrigerator, Amana. Dishwasher, Bosch.

ASK JEEVES
(d) Pop flows freely in the butler’s pantry (original to the house), where Sonja’s kids, Justin and Ashley, hang out. Tin signs and canisters, including a breadbox that holds dog food, add to the sodafountain ambiance.

BLUE’S DOs
Rosette napkin holders and kitchen towels ("A no-sew project!") dress up casement windows in the alcove off the butler’s pantry. The corner cabinets were original to the space, but Sonja swathed them in pale blue in an homage to Scandinavian design. Paint, Benjamin Moore.

SONJA DISHES THE DETAILS
(e) With kitchen guru John Dick at her side, Sonja thought outside the box when concocting many of her quirky details. When she had diffi culty mounting a chandelier in her alcove’s vaulted ceiling, she positioned a TINY BIRDHOUSE with the same peaked angle into the spot, drilled a hole through it, and hung thefi xture.
(f) Sonja achieved true BRACKET BLISS when she painted four corbels she’d "schlepped around for 30 years" and installed them to hold shelves.
(g) "I didn’t want a typical hood treatment—too obtrusive," says Sonja, who chose this charming vintage COAL STOVE FIRESCREEN instead. Its ledge holds Staffordshire figurines.
(h) For the COOL COOP display walls, Sonja affixed chicken wire to the butler’s pantry from floor to ceiling, then hammered platter-hanging hooks directly into the walls.
(i) Refrigerator doors were "faced" and adorned with BIG, SHOWY HARDWARE to match the heavy confidence of the cabinetry.
