When Teri and Jeff York decided to redecorate their home in Orange, California, Teri kept the testosterone factor in mind.
“Boys are physical, messy, and loud—including my husband,” says Teri, mother of Garrett, 11, Cole, 9, and Cameron, 5. “Whatever I came up with had to be super-comfortable and livable.”
She also wanted the décor to reflect her family’s interests. “We love the outdoors, especially the beach—90 percent of our vacations are beach bound,” she says. “And I’ve always enjoyed antiques and a casual, colorful French country look.”
With help from friend and decorator Andrea Lambert, she combined these varied elements into a harmonious whole.

Easygoing Eclecticism
(a) In the living room, reupholstered antique chair, bought for a song at Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market face a tall antique mirror from France. "It took six guys to carry it in." (b) A custom-built hutch holds family treasures and castoffs rom Goodwill. (c) At the beach with (left to right) Garrett, 11; Cameron, 5; Teri and Jeff; and Cole, 9.

Bright, breezy, and effortless
(d) Dutch doors create an open, airy foyer. “We almost replaced the stairway, but saw that the wood was in fine shape beneath the 30-year-old carpeting.” They covered the steps with several coats of black boat paint and added a new rail, saving about $4,000. (e) A draped doorway lends a hint of drama.

(f) In the living room opposite the fireplace, a handmade shell table celebrates the Yorks’ favorite destination. The bamboo shade adds texture and lets in light. “It’s a nice change from floral curtains.”
