The Yorks are so family oriented that Jeff named his business JTB Supply Company
(short for “Jeff, Teri, and the Boys“). Naturally, comfort and coziness topped
their wish list when they redid their home. Although they appreciated that the
sprawling structure (eight rooms, four baths) was big enough to accommodate
three growing boys and their friends, its high ceilings and big walls were a
little daunting. Two-toned, two-textured walls in the living and family rooms
visually “lowered” the lofty ceilings and cut the walls to an approachable size.
Decorative plates above the mirrors in the master bedroom served the same
purpose. The bare concrete floor in the living room was covered with
whitewashed, sanded walnut planks. It’s so sturdy, the kids can roller-skate on
it. “The more dented and distressed it gets, the more beautiful it becomes,”
Teri says. “We walk barefoot on these floors and the boys jump on the beds,”
she adds. “I never would have guessed that a place could be so pretty and
practical at the same time, but it is.
Plum luxurious
(i) “I wish you could see a ‘before’ picture of the master
bath—it used to have brown tile and a gold tub,” Teri recalls. “It was so ugly.”
Deep violet walls (which echo the bedroom’s accent color), white subway tiles,
and a curved, marble-topped vanity made all the difference. “Now I feel just
like a princess.”
Ship shape
(j) “We used to have just two sinks in the
boys’
bathroom, and the three of them would fight for space.” Teri got the idea
for a trough sink when she saw one in a restaurant. The black cabinet
was custom
built with a ledge behind the sink. The bathroom is right
off the backyard pool,
so a nautical theme seemed natural. “It touches
my heart when I look in and see
my three boys brushing their teeth
together.”
