how to make it
pennant banner
1. Create triangle template. Fold an 8½ x 11-inch piece of cardstock in half. With pencil and straight edge, draw one diagonal line from corner to corner. Cut along line. Open at fold to create a triangle. Create a second triangle template about 1 inch smaller on each side than the first. If desired, create a third smaller triangle for variation.

2. Cut two pieces of fabric and one piece of double-sided contact paper approximately ½ inch larger than the largest template. Peel protective film from one side of contact paper. Carefully place fabric on sticky side of contact paper. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles. Repeat to affix backing fabric on reverse side.

3. Trace triangle pattern onto fabric and cut out pennant with scissors or pinking shears.

4. Repeat steps two and three for smaller triangles; however, affix fabric to only one side of contact paper. Place the other side of contact paper on larger triangle to finish the pennant.

5. Choose the word you want to spell. Make pennants for the number of letters to spell the word.

6. Use a computer to print out desired letters, or draw letters freehand. Cut out and trace onto fabric. Adhere fabric to contact paper as directed above. Cut out letters. Affix one letter to each pennant as desired.

7. To string pennants together, lay pennants side by side (corner to corner) on a flat surface. Measure and cut ribbon to the total length across, plus at least two extra feet on either end. Glue ribbon along top of each pennant, making sure that corners are touching each other.

8. Cut 3- to 4-inch ribbon lengths equal to the number of spaces between pennants. Attach them with knots to finish.

single large pennant
1. Decide on the size you prefer, and use a large piece of graph paper to make the triangle template. Follow steps 1-4 above.

2. With pennant face down, glue dowel along the top edge, rolling fabric around the dowel.

3. Glue three 2- to 3-inch strips of ribbon at bottom point of pennant. Tie ends of a ribbon hanger to either end of dowel and add 4- to 5-inch ribbon with knot to each end. Paint chipboard letters in desired color(s). Let dry. Affix painted chipboard lettering and hang.
