Project designed and crafted by Trenna Travis Lange
how to make
1. Decide the size of the finished tray, and add 1 inch all around for the
sides. Measure and cut two coordinating decorative papers, one for the top and
one for the bottom of the tray. 2. Cut two pieces of vinyl about an inch or so
larger than your paper (if your papers are 6 inches square, cut the pieces of
vinyl 7 inches square). 3. Use spray mount, a piece of double-sided tape, or a
dab of glue to adhere the two pieces of paper, right sides out. 4. Sandwich
the layered paper between the two pieces of vinyl. Use a straight stitch on your
sewing machine to sew a seam on three sides of the square, 1 inch in from the
edge of the papers. 5. Three sides sewn, you now have a “pocket.” Use glue or
double-sided tape to adhere mementos inside the pocket, onto the paper that will
form the top of the tray. Let dry. 6. Sew the fourth seam to close the
“pocket.” Next, sew all around the outside of the square, 1/8 inch in from edge
of papers. Trim excess vinyl to size of papers. Fold up tray corners, pinch, and
sew to form tray’s sides.
(a) This project is a little too complicated for very young kids to make on their
own, but they can choose the photos and other souvenirs of happy times while Mom
handles the scissors and the sewing machine.
Use papers in his favorite colors and patterns for the background, then add a
map from a special vacation, ticket stubs from the team’s winning game, and
metal or paper letters, even coins, for extra dimension.
