Make them yourself from easy-to-sew vinyl. Just add decorative paper, an
eyelet or buckle, then string around anything you want to call your own.
Experiment with decorative fabric shears, such as Fiskars, to vary the shapes.
Distinguishing stitches, thread colors, and hangers customize each tag.
HOW TO MAKE IT
1. Choose your vinyl and decide the shape of the tag you
want. Trace two of the same pattern onto wrong side of vinyl and cut out shapes
to make tag front and back. 2. For address window, on clear acetate, trace shape just smaller than the
original pattern. Cut out shape. 3. For the round tag, on vinyl back, use an X-acto knife and metal ruler to
cut a slit just wide enough to slip in the address. For the rectangular tags,
cut slits in both vinyl front and clear acetate, making sure to match the slits.
Refer to the templates as placement guides. 4. For the round tag, using an X-acto knife and following the template, cut
out an inside circle shape, or trace and cut around your own template, such as
the top of a cup or lid. For the rectangular tags, using an X-acto knife and
metal ruler, cut a rectangular window shape from the vinyl front. Refer to the
templates as placement guides. 5. Set sewing machine to desired stitch. (Test your tension on pieces of scrap
vinyl first.) With right side face up, stitch vinyl front and clear acetate
together, following close around window edge. Match top and bottom vinyl shapes,
right sides out, and stitch all layers together from the front. 6. Using a hole punch, punch a hole through all three layers. Using an eyelet
tool, follow manufacturer’s instructions to add a metal eyelet. Run ribbon or
shoelace through eyelet, and add a snap to the ribbon. To attach a vinyl strap
or ribbon without eyelet, cut a slit in the vinyl equal to the size of the strap
or ribbon, string your hanger through the slit, and add buckle. 7. Print out address (or message) label, cut and tuck behind the acetate
window. Attach to bag, and you’re off!
