HIP-HUGGER TOTE
(g) Can’t fit into your old high school favorites? Turn them
into a tote designed by artist Karen Harlan. The best part: one pair of jeans
yields two totes!
make it: Cut leg of blue jean about one foot from the
bottom. Stitch leg bottom closed. Cut off a jean pocket and decorate with
ticking details. Cut clear vinyl as a sleeve for a favorite photo (how about you
in high school?), then sew or glue on the pocket using fabric adhesive. Line
tote with striped ticking, scalloping it along the top edges and holding in
place with retro buttons. Make a strap from leftover jean fabric.
ROOTIN' TOOTIN' TABLE
(h) Perk up a thrift-store table for this cowboy homage by
Dena Fishbein. You’ll be done long before sundown.
make it: Using fabric adhesive, glue denim onto tabletop,
folding edges under. Glue ball chain around perimeter of table. Glue ticking
strip on top of denim. Add decorative trim such as rickrack to edges of ticking.
Place photo and ephemera on ticking and adhere using archival glue. Glue denim
fringe around interior of table apron. For a rugged, Western look, hammer
upholstery tacks around table apron. Set piece of glass on top.
THAT'S THE TICKING
(i) Who’d ever guess that artist Brenda Walton’s shadowbox
frame is constructed from museum board with a mac and cheese box stuck
on the
back! It’s all disguised under ticking and flowers cut from
velvet and
upholstery fabric. The box is covered with decorative
papers.
