SCOUTING OUT SPRINGTIME
Grab some clippers and see what’s blooming in
your beds, then arrange them in unexpected ways. (a) Hot-pink peonies
spill from buckets and watering cans. (b) Give perennials their first haircut
by snipping the stems short and clustering them in drinking glasses,
left.
AIRY AS FAIRY WINGS
(c) We made the tablecloth ourselves, but it
truly took only minutes. Cut a swath of organdy to fit your dimensions, then
sew on velvet millinery flowers. Quickie method: Use a hot glue gun. Cluster
the blossoms for emphasis or create a pattern. Place a fresh lavender wand
at each end of the table to encourage relaxation. Velvet flowers, Tinsel
Trading. Ribbon, Mokuba.
AWAKEN YOUR INNER SET DESIGNER dramatic tablesettings
(d) You’re among friends,
so why play it safe? Rather than repeating your usual palette, venture
into new territory. This spring-struck hostess gathered plates
and vases in a slightly giddy mix of periwinkle and lavender
spiced with deep mauve, below. Skyblue ribbons not only cinch
napkins but carry the color scheme to the chairbacks, left.
Ribbon, Mokuba.
FETCHING ETCHINGS an artist’s tribute to mom
(e) Stressing
over the take-home gift? Printmaker Laura Zeck to the rescue. Aptly named
Short Stories, her company is all about inviting clients to tell their own
tales through images. You choose from etchings in her archive, and she
combines them in frameable prints, above left.
