ARTIST’S PROFILE Sally Jean Alexander of Portland, Oregon, wears her
heart on her sleeve and her history around her neck. She’s turned the concept of
a traditional locket concealing a loved one’s photo into a fresh art form where
“junk” jewelry meets miniature scrapbook. A self-taught artist, she voluntarily
left a high-profile real estate career seven years ago to pursue her obsession
to make “pretty little things.” Her playful charms are sold on her website
(sallyjean.com) and at chic boutiques across the United States and Europe.
Out of the Box
You never know what kind of tarnished treasure is going to
find its way into Sally Jean’s jewelry. To construct a pendant, (a) she began
with a small cardboard jewelry box and added a childhood photo, ephemera from an
18th-century Italian ledger, and text cut from an old book. The necklace, (b) was finished with found objects and handmade charms. (c) A vintage book
altered with paint and anagram letters. source Gemstone, fossilcartel.com.
Beautiful Book
(d) A special gift box showcases a handmade bracelet. Sally
used a craft knife to cut the center from an old book. She glued the pages to
create a stiff box and attached a piece of beveled glass to the front. source
