ARTIST’S PROFILE Arizona artist Tena Sprenger shares her passion for paper
arts, book arts, and scrapbooking by teaching creative techniques to other
enthusiasts throughout the United States and abroad several times a month. She
is a co-author of Artful Memories and the newly released book, Lifelines. Tena
balances her busy teaching, writing, and art career by spending time with her
husband, Mike, and two children, Alyssa and Michael. “I cherish the beach
vacations we take as a family each summer. It’s our time to just be.”
just beachy
(a) Each July, when Arizona temperatures soar to 110 degrees, the Sprenger family
heads to California to relax and unwind. Artist Tena Sprenger began her
scrapbook project with an oversize children’s board book, used sandpaper to
remove the shiny new images, then added a layer of gesso. She created a graphic
introduction by closely cropping some favorite photos, sanding and painting the
edges, and lining them in a row. source Gesso, Liquitex, Unbleached Titanium,

simple pleasures
Tena opted for simplicity when designing her scrapbook.
Patterned paper, chipboard letters, stamps, and paint were all she needed to
augment the story of siblings finding joy in friendship, (b) and (c). An
oversized photo, (d), brings a smile to her lips. “It represents the view
from the patio, where Mike and I like to relax with a drink,” she says. Notice
how she mixes the size of her photos to keep pages from being monotonous. source
