ARTIST'S PROFILE
Jenni Bowlin is a preservationist, writer, photographer, and
collector. Nine years ago, she began combining these interests into scrapbooking projects. “I am continually trying to recycle, repurpose, and reinvent vintage objects into contemporary storytelling—and scrapbooking is a wonderful way to do it,” says the creative force behind Tennessee-based Jenni Bowlin Studio. She’s featured in The Look Book, from Autumn Leaves (2006).

Birds of a Feather
(a) After reading Molly’s New Neighbors, a 1920s storybook, Jenni Bowlin felt a strong connection to the tale of a mother sparrow watching her babies grow and take flight. The story, along with a reproduction birdcage, inspired a unique memory art project. Color copies of the book’s pages, patterned paper, and pearl buttons give the piece added impact. Flight of Fancy
(b) Jenni takes a broad view of scrapbooking. As shown in her trio of birds, most anything can be a “scrapbook” as long as it includes words, photos, and a theme. Though her boys are only 9 and 6, she stops to ponder in her journaling, how fast the years fly.

JENNI’S TOP TIPS
Good handwriting takes practice. Stick with it because it’s your imprint.
Always make your mark on your art, even if it’s just to date your project or scrapbook page in your own hand.
You don’t have to spend your weekends in antiques stores. Make new paper look old by sanding or inking the edges.
