CAPTIVATING KEEPSAFE
(a) “The weathered metal box seemed a perfect enclosure
for protecting my hopes and dreams through the cold days of winter. Its
firm
snap-down closure suggests a safe and secure ‘keepsafe’, a play on
the word
‘keepsake’, ” says Lynne. The 12” by 12” box, a fortunate
discovery, is the
ideal size for housing an art journal utilizing her
line of scrapbooking papers.

Artist's Profile These are a few of artist Lynne
Perrella’s favorite things: string, paper,
old buttons, feathers, bark,
bone, vintage photos, cheesecloth, ribbon, and
fabric scraps. “I use
very humble materials in my work,” she explains. “I
find that when I
spend too much money on an object, it becomes a little too
precious, a
little too one-of-a-kind. It can take over the art. Small things
have
importance and meaning, yet these items are often lost or overlooked.” While a new year is significant for most people, it is paramount in
her
life. With a December 31st birthday, the New York artist finds that
simultaneously looking ahead and behind is often a central theme in her
soul-searching work.
ARTFUL ASSEMBLAGE
(b) Lynne used wisps of paper, correspondence, feathers, a
watch fragment, a bit of birch, twisted giftwrap, and paper cutouts,
all tied
with string to evoke winter’s seasonal slumber. She embedded
the assemblage in a
window of black foam core covered with her line of
luscious scrapbooking paper.

SECRET SURPRISE
(c) “An edge is not just a piece of paper
folded in
half. It’s an opportunity,” says Lynne. Photos of the artist as a
child
and adult peek out from folded journal pages. Plastic
coil binds pages of
colored cardstock that’s been painted and layered
with bits of
patterned paper
and handmade embellishments.
