Artist's Profile Heidi Swapp juggles the roles of wife, mother of three
(with a new baby on the way), designer, and creator of her own scrapbooking
line. In honor of Mother’s Day, she made a scrapbook that expresses the
connection between the generations of women in her family. “ The picture on
front is of my mom whispering to me. She looks so young,” Heidi muses. “I
realized what a fragile position it is, to be young and a new mom. I wanted to
express the gratitude I felt for my mother and for my daughter.”
Putting it together
(a) All Stitched Up “Stitching is the best way to bind paper and
soft embellishments,” explains Heidi, who keeps her sewing machine at the ready.

(b) Flip Flop Heidi used
a unique flip technique for her framed Mother’s Day scrapbook. She sewed seams
along all four sides to minimize bulk and ensure proper fit. “I’m always looking
for ways to make things more intriguing.” sources: Patterned paper,

(d) Lovely Lettering
Heidi is known for her beautiful handwriting. “I can’t draw, so I’ve always
doodled letters.” sources: Love Your Handwriting, by Heidi Swapp, 2005,

HEIDI’s TOP TIPS
Use pencil first when journaling
and then trace over your writing in black pen. Always keep your
sewing machine set up. You’re more likely to use it for scrapbooking if
it’s readily available. Good design doesn’t need a lot of
product. Simple pages with minimal accents keep the focus on the story.
