Keeping Secrets
For Charlotte, good design begins with a great image. A
photo of Mo and her sister, Maggie, whispering behind menus in a candlelit
restaurant provides plenty of inspiration. Charlotte created the patterned paper
using freehand images carved into an ordinary potato, which was then dipped into
acrylic paint and used as a stamp. sources: Plaid paint, plaidonline.com.
Devoted
Mo was at the fire
station the morning of her 17th birthday (the department's minimum-age
requirement) with a completed application. Charlotte scanned a small vintage
flag into her computer and a created a digital photo collage. "Proudly We
Serve," the department's motto, is framed by a small gold charm. sources:

A Day's Work
"I love this photo of Mo
because it captures her intensity. Her being a firefighter has become the niche
that defines her as a young woman," says Charlotte, who used her daughter's
monthly call sheet, listing dates and activities, to mat the pictures.
CHARLOTTE's TOP TIPS
Hand stitching lends a handmade, tactile quality to memory books.
Use muffin tins to store charms, beads, cut word phrases, etc., while working. It keeps things organized and
ensures you don't lose track of tiny embellishments.
Deconstruct junk jewelry to make your own charms.
