Beaded beauties
(a) Felt adds soft, appealing texture. The more free-form you cut your shapes, the more natural they will look. To make the flower “branches,” reroute thread through preceding few beads. String beads, leaves, and flower, ending with a small bead. Bring needle back through the end bead and back through the “branch” to starting position. Continue beading. Felt balls, Tinsel Trading.

Garden on a thread
(b) On durable beading thread (available at bead shops), string a clasp, seed beads, leaves, and handmade felt flowers until desired length. For felt flowers, machine-stitch layered pieces cut from felt and stuffed with batting as desired. Add sequins and seed beads for dimension.

Trends & Tips from the Experts
The trend across fashion is elaborate embellishment—and the more detailed you make it, the greater the appeal. In beadwork, that translates to “anything goes.” Accent felt pieces with stitching using variegated and metallic thread. Retro designs such as big puffy flowers and hearts are also in style. Look for inexpensive beads from department stores, craft stores, flea markets, and home sales. Feathers, sequins, bold shapes, and trim from hats and purses can make your beadwork blossom.
