TRENDS & TIPS from the experts
1. Choose ribbons of the same color but different widths and patterns—stripes, checks, and dots, for example—to give your project a designed look.
2. Try ribbons in bold jewel tones to liven up basic neutral fabrics.
3. Overlay semi-sheer organdy ribbon over a narrower patterned or solid ribbon. This creates a delicate layered effect. Or use organdy ribbon over or under a row of decorative buttons or embroidery.
4. Add ribbons printed with words and phrases to spell out your best wishes on aprons made as gifts.

Tie One On
(a) Inspired by carpenter’s gear, this colorful apron is a like a craft cupboard you can wear (McCall’s M4322). Pockets and loops in various sizes hold everything from bulky tools to pens and paintbrushes.

Stir Up some Fun
(b) Make the apron from scratch (McCall’s M4534), or start with a store-bought one. Ribbon accents are the icing on the cake. Add to pockets, edges, and hem, sewing by hand or machine.
