Take ONE
Choose sturdy cotton fabric in shades plucked from summer’s brightest bouquet to create covers for your chairs. Coordinate your fabrics to highlight colors in your garden, or to capture the charisma of that cast of characters known as your family and friends (crisp stripes for him; flirty checks for her). We used Simplicity Pattern 5952.

Places, everyone
Make your chair covers from fade-resistant fabrics so they’ll stay vibrant all season long. Improvise with trims, adding a band of rickrack or grosgrain ribbon along the edges. Try mixing a seat panel made from one fabric and a back panel made from another.

Trends & Tips from the Experts
Machine embroidery is a great way to embellish the chair covers with a favorite saying. You could even personalize each chair with a family member’s or frequent guest’s name.
To machine embroider words on the chair’s back, first mark the center point of the panel. Next, since the panel is too narrow and stiff to hoop, pin a heavy weight stabilizer to the canvas. Then baste the canvas to the stabilizer.
