Hot Stuff!
(a) This handy hot mitt (McCall’s #M5344) serves up delicious,
retro-inspired fabric. Polka dots on one side and checks on the other coordinate
with classic or contemporary kitchens, and the nifty “tape measure” element adds
graphic punch.
Pretty Practical
(b) Not everything has to match. If you love the combination, it works. For
a no-fail fabric blend, match your favorite print and plaid, and back with
pretty polka dots. Experiment with direction: Cut fabric on the bias to change
the look. To delight your favorite cook, give as a set with utensils and
recipes.
Trends & Tips from the Experts
Retro and vintage-inspired looks are fresh right now,
including feed sacks, embroidery, and nursery rhyme characters. Repurpose
nostalgic linens such as grandma’s hankies, antique clothing, quilt pieces,
neckties, and tablecloths.Consider scale: Smaller prints often work better
in smaller spaces, although a large pattern in a small space can add
contemporary flair. For heat resistance, layer cotton-polyester batting or heavy
fabric such as denim. Add personal touches (monograms, heat-resistant trims) to
make it unique.
