(a) A dollhouse filled with coral, tiny papier-mâché shoes,
Chinese watercolors-they’re all for sale at Ruby Lang, a boutique at SoLo in
Solana Beach's Cedros Design District. (b) Housed in a funky warehouse in San
Diego, Laura y Laura specializes in Mexican folk art, like this pottery from the
Michoacán state. (c) Across town at Urban Seed & Flower, you’ll find botanical
charts, garden statuary, and, yes, seeds. (d) Interior designer Randy Boyd cherry-picks antiques from
France, Italy, and colonial Mexico for his Laguna boutique, Thurston/Boyd &
Co. (e) It’s all about contrast at
Juxtaposition in Newport Coast. Crisp
white slipcovered sofas mingle here with ebony antiques. (f)
At a SoLo shop, artist/photographer Jennifer Price repurposes industrial
workhorses like adding machines and steel filing cabinets into sculptural
furniture. (g) Hit the brakes at Camps and Cottages, owned by Molly
English, the woman who wrote the book of the same name. Rustic wares
include
this bunny weathervane. (h) Sift through the past at Architectural Salvage, where vintage
locks, keys, and hinges are among the booty. (Tip: It’s on the way to
San
Diego’s airport.)

(i) Sorry, folks, the old movie reel is sold. But there’s a
lot more
to see at Charles Kelly at Home in Laguna Beach. Let Murray the English
cocker spaniel show you around. (j) Antiques, soaps, and lovely gifts
abound at
Magnolia Creek and Company in Encinitas. (k) Owner Carole Carden presides
over the 4,000-square-foot
merchant
collective. Her specialty: tabletop objets
and design
books. 11 At SoLo, artist
Jan Dutcher offers
wooden platters bearing hand-painted messages. (l) At SoLo, artist Jan Dutcher offers wooden platters bearing hand-painted
