Admit it: You can’t say “Minneapolis” without adding “St. Paul” in the same
breath. It’s like getting two treats in one. Both cities are jammed with
delightful neighborhoods, seductive shops, and cultural events aplenty. Our
story starts in Minneapolis, in the general area referred to by locals as 50th
and France. Of the many great stops here, some of our favorites are in a
15-block radius, intermixed with charming houses on tree-lined streets. Don’t
head across the river without a stop in Uptown, a vital area in the middle of
Minneapolis. Full of great restaurants, wonderful shops, and a colorful mix of
young and old, it’s especially popular during summer, when everyone seems to be
bicycling, skating, or strolling around the nearby lakes. St. Paul, you’ll
find, is less hectic than its twin city, but equally delightful. As in
Minneapolis, there are many distinctive neighborhoods, each with their own
treasures to discover.

Minneapolis!” (b) Things you never thought about but instantly need the
minute you see
them, like these old bowling pins, are available at
Ax-Man Surplus in St. Paul. (c) Theatre Antiques
has a fabulous collection of vintage
eyeglasses and other funky finds. (d) When you walk through the door at Colibri, which offers amazing elements
for unique homes and gardens, it’s hard to remember you’re indoors. (e) Gallery
360 features one-of-a-kind artwork and irresistible gifts. (f) Margo
Tantau, our intrepid guide to the shops of Minneapolis-St. Paul, at Ax-Man
Surplus, one of her favorite stops. It’s stuffed with every type of small
surplus you can imagine (porcelain balloon molds, airline dishes, doll
heads)—and many that you can’t. (g)
Lighting, lamps, and shades from old to new, quirky to classy, illuminate
Vintage Lighting Gallery. (h) Billed as “an enchanting little store,”
Victory
lives up to it with sparkling chandeliers, lovely old French linens,
European sofas laden with toile pillows, and gifts and baubles for your
friends.
Visitors come to browse, but seldom leave without a full
shopping bag.
