Once the ridiculed stepchild of the publishing industry, romance novels now
generate nearly a billion-and-a-half dollars in sales a year. More than 2,100
titles are published annually, representing anywhere from 49 to 55 percent of
all paperback fiction sales in the United States. For writers, the convention is
a chance to market their work and meet their fans, who offer feedback and
discuss their favorite characters as if they were real people. (a) Who will be the next Fabio? Bodybuilders
