Follow our lead
(c) Even spooky, clove-studded sayings give off a heavenly scent. Trace a
glass or cookie cutter to make full-of-beans circles. (d) Copy and
enlarge "Boo" patterns and transfer eerie expressions to pumpkins with carbon
paper. Or use our models to make a traceable template from cardboard. (printable template)
You Will Need:
Pumpkins; patterns and carbon paper; grease pencil or chalk
marker;
paintbrush; tacky glue (Sobo, Lexel, or Weldbond work nicely); dried
beans; poppy, mustard, or coriander seeds; cloves; a small awl or
upholstery
needle

Stick and treat! Forget the carving knife-decorate your pumpkins with beans, seeds, and cloves
(a) Navy beans make for a ghoulish grin; poppy seeds form a checkerboard on a
ghostly gourd and bellow "boo" from an orange orb. Select decorations small enough for sprinkling or amply shaped for easy placement. (b) Brush adhesive on sketched shapes and lines. Trickle poppy seeds across sticky surfaces or plunk bean into glue.
Pumpkin pointers
PICK PERFECT PUMPKINS: Choose ones with flat bottoms and
contours and colors suited to your design.
CLEAN THE CANVAS: Wash pumpkin with soap and water and let dry.
RECYCLE: Cover workstations with newspaper to catch seeds that fall from
pumpkin.
EYEBALL THE GOURD: Locate its best side and divide the whole globe into
quarters to help place and space your design.
ASSIGN IT A DISGUISE: Outline facial features, words, and shapes with a
grease pencil or chalk marker directly on the pumpkin or transfer patterns with
carbon paper if you are more comfortable working that way.
RESTRAIN THE ROTUND: Brace pumpkins with bricks or books to prevent rolling.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER: Apply glue with a paintbrush one section at a time.
Arrange large seeds or beans (or sprinkle poppy seeds) when glue becomes tacky.
Let dry 90 minutes before turning pumpkin and continuing.
CHECK IT OUT: Measure pumpkin's circumference to determine size of squares in
checkerboard. Draw wider boxes at bottom, narrower ones near top. Arrange
poppy-seed triangles around stem for a faux lid.
ADD A SPICY PUNCH: Outline a spooky catchword with cloves inserted into holes
made with a small awl or upholstery needle.
GET CREATIVE: Highlight a pumpkin's ribs with rows of cloves or personalize
it with a poppy-seed name.
