Hang it up for the holidays
(a) Deck your entry hall or coat rack with a batch of these festive hangers for your guests, or give them as favors when the party end.(b) An embroidered hanging sachet makes a fragrant ornament for a holiday hanger.
Hangers - How to make 'em:
1. Cut batting into strips 9 inches wide. Wrap each arm of the
hanger to four thicknesses. Baste the batting in place. 2. Use this template
to cut four pieces of fabric, deciding first which direction to run
stripes or patterns. With fabric folded right sides out, cut two pairs of
pieces. 3. To apply piping or rickrack, machine baste on right sides of two
of the pieces along ½ inch seam allowance. If using rickrack, center stitching
line along center of rickrack. If using piping, stitch just to the inside of the
cording, making sure that the piping itself is towards the inside of the piece.
In either case, apply trim only around the two long, curved sides of the piece,
not across the short flat end, which will form the opening. 4. Lay one
piece that has trim attached over one that does not, right sides together. Turn
pair of pieces over so that the basting side is face up. Use the basting line as
a guide for your seam, sewing the seam just slightly inside (toward the center
of the piece) the basting line. 5. Clip seam at curved ends, turn right
side out. Remove any basting thread that is visible. Press. 6. Stuff a
2-inch ball of batting into the end of each half of the hanger cover. Insert
batting covered hanger ends into covers, keeping seams straight along top and
bottom of hanger. Where the two sides of the cover meet, turn ends inside and
slipstitch together by hand. 7. Fold ribbon in half and place around
neck of hanger with ends hanging in front. Pull ribbon around to the back of the
hanger and to the top. Tie bow in front. Trim ends.
Sachets - How to make 'em
1. To make the sachet
as shown, first download the image from http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/5554.htm and embroider on fabric, either by hand or machine. 2. Center motif, cut
to a 4 by 4-inch piece of fabric. 3. Cut two pieces of
fabric both 3 by 4 inches. 4. Fold and press a
¼-inch hem on one 4-inch side of both pieces of fabric. 5. Machine stitch
hems. 6. Baste rickrack
around perimeter of embroidered square, ¼ inch from edge. 7. Right sides
together, pin the two 3 by 4-inch pieces onto 4-inch piece, overlapping stitched
sides. 8. Machine stitch seam
all around over basting line. 9. Turn right side out
and press. 10. Slip stitch small
ring in center on back with top of ring just below top. 11. Insert sachet
inside cover. 12. Slip ribbon used
in making padded hanger through ring on top of sachet, then tie in bow around
neck of hanger.
